Spirits in Prison

The difficult passage in 1 Peter 3:18–20 does not teach that Christ descended into hell to preach to dead human souls, but rather that the Word, by the Spirit, made a proclamation to the imprisoned rebellious angels during the days of Noah. These “spirits in prison” are the demons who left their proper domain, were restrained by God, and remain confined to the earth under divine limitation. Understanding this protects the truth of the mortality of man, the reality of Christ’s death, and the consistency of God’s plan of salvation.
