Between the Two Evenings

The Hebrew phrase bein ha-arbayim, translated “at twilight” or “between the two evenings,” is the key to determining the correct time for killing the Passover lamb. The most natural and scripturally supported meaning places the sacrifice after sunset at the beginning of the fourteenth day of the first month, consistent with Deuteronomy 16:6 and the practice of the Sadducees. Observing the Passover at the beginning of the fourteenth rather than at its end preserves the precise sequence of events established by God and followed by Jesus Christ.
