Shepherd vs. Hireling
Jeff Noggle - August 1, 2026
Jesus contrasts the true shepherd, who owns the sheep and willingly lays down his life for them, with the hireling who flees at the first sign of danger because he has no genuine concern for the flock. Every believer—whether parent, husband, teacher, or simply a Christian in daily life—is called to function as a shepherd rather than a hireling by taking personal responsibility, standing firmly for God’s truth, and protecting those under their care. The question each person must answer is how well Jesus knows them by the way they live and whether others can clearly see Christ reflected in their faithful, sacrificial example.
